Letter to My Muslim and Jewish Sisters and Brothers in Australia

5 March 2024

The current Israel-Hamas war is one of many iterations of violence over the past more than 70 years, though this is the most extreme in its duration, the number of deaths (many of them children), the amount of destruction it has wrought, and the consequent humanitarian disaster it has brought to the people of Gaza.  This long-standing conflict will never be resolved until the underlying issues of occupation, dispossession, settlements, and exile are addressed in a just way that respects the legitimate aspirations of both Israelis and Palestinians, Jewish, Muslim, and Christian.  This will only be achievable when the protagonists and their supporters around the world recognise the equal human dignity of all peoples involved.

Ever since 7 October 2023, I have been alarmed by the partisanship shown by governments, communities, and individuals, and the deafening silence shown by many. This one-sidedness is having tragic consequences for the Palestinians of Gaza. I want to express support for all the victims, but do not want to add to the partisanship. Therefore, I have addressed an open letter to BOTH my Muslim AND Jewish sisters and brothers.
