MESSAGE FOR THE MONTH OF RAMADAN AND ‘ID AL-FITR

 1439 H. / 2018 A.D.

Christians and Muslims: From Competition to Collaboration

Dear Muslim Brothers and Sisters,

In his Providence, God the Almighty has granted you the opportunity to observe anew the fasting of Ramadan and to celebrate ‘Id al-Fitr.

The Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue appreciates the importance of this month and the great effort by the Muslims throughout the world to fast, pray and share the Almighty’s gifts with the poor.

Mindful of the gifts prompted by Ramadan, we join you in thanking the Merciful God for his benevolence and generosity, and we extend to you our heartfelt best wishes.

The thoughts we would like to share with you on this occasion, dear Muslim brothers and sisters, concern a vital aspect of relations between Christians and Muslims: the need to move from competition to collaboration.

A spirit of competition has too often marked past relations between Christians and Muslims, the negative consequences of which are evident: jealousy, recriminations and tensions. In some cases, these have led to violent confrontations, especially where religion has been instrumentalized, above all due to self-interest and political motives.

Such interreligious competition wounds the image of religions and their followers, and it fosters the view that religions are not sources of peace, but of tension and violence.

To prevent and overcome these negative consequences, it is important that we Christians and Muslims recall the religious and moral values that we share, while acknowledging our differences. By recognizing what we hold in common and by showing respect for our legitimate differences, we can more firmly establish a solid foundation for peaceful relations, moving from competition and confrontation to an effective cooperation for the common good. This particularly assist those most in need, and allows us to offer a credible witness to the Almighty’s love for the whole of humanity.

We all have the right and the duty to witness to the All-Powerful One we worship, and to share our beliefs with others, while respecting their religion and religious sentiments.

So that we may further peaceful and fraternal relations, let us work together and honor each another. In this way we will give glory to the Almighty and promote harmony in society, which is becoming increasingly multi-ethnic, multi-religious and multi-cultural.

We conclude by renewing our best wishes for a fruitful fast and a joyful ‘Id, and assure you of our solidarity in prayer.

Chers frères et sœurs musulmans,

Dans sa Providence, Dieu le Tout-Puissant vous a donné à nouveau l’occasion d’observer le jeûne du Ramadan et de célébrer ‘Id al-Fitr.

Le Conseil pontifical pour le Dialogue interreligieux sait l’importance de ce mois et les efforts déployés par les musulmans à travers le monde pour jeûner, prier et partager les dons du Tout-Puissant avec les pauvres.

Conscients des dons du Ramadan, nous, chrétiens, nous vous rejoignons dans votre action de grâce au Dieu Miséricordieux pour sa bienveillance, sa générosité, et nous vous présentons, en cette occasion, nos meilleurs vœux.

En la circonstance, les pensées que nous aimerions partager avec vous, chers frères et sœurs musulmans, concernent un aspect essentiel des relations entre chrétiens et musulmans: la nécessité de passer de la compétition à la collaboration.

En effet, l’esprit de compétition a trop souvent marqué les relations passées entre chrétiens et musulmans. Ses conséquences négatives sont évidentes: jalousie, récriminations et tensions. Dans certains cas, celles-ci ont parfois conduit à des affrontements violents, notamment lorsque la religion a fait l’objet de manipulations motivées par des intérêts particuliers et des desseins politiques.

Une telle concurrence interreligieuse blesse l’image des religions et leurs adeptes. Elle renforce aussi l’idée que les religions ne sont pas source de paix, mais génératrices de tensions et de violence.

Pour prévenir et surmonter les conséquences négatives qui en dérivent, il est important que nous, chrétiens et musulmans, nous rappelions les valeurs religieuses et morales que nous partageons, tout en reconnaissant nos différences. En témoignant de ce que nous avons en commun et du respect de nos légitimes différences, nous pouvons établir une base solide pour des relations pacifiques, loin de la compétition et de la confrontation, pour fonder une coopération efficace en vue du bien commun. Cette attitude positive constitue une aide à l’égard de ceux qui se trouvent dans le besoin et nous permet d’offrir un témoignage crédible de l’amour du Tout-Puissant pour l’humanité tout-entière.

Tous, nous avons le droit et le devoir de témoigner du Tout-Puissant que nous adorons, de partager nos croyances avec les autres, tout en respectant leur religion et leurs sentiments religieux.

Afin de poursuivre nos relations pacifiques et fraternelles, travaillons ensemble et honorons-nous les uns les autres. Ainsi, nous rendrons gloire au Tout-Puissant et favoriserons l’harmonie dans nos sociétés, toujours plus multiethniques, multi-religieuses et multiculturelles.

En vous renouvelant nos vœux les meilleurs pour un jeûne fructueux et un ‘Id joyeux, nous vous assurons de notre solidarité priante.

Cari fratelli e sorelle musulmani,

Nella Sua Provvidenza l’Onnipotente vi ha offerto la possibilità di osservare nuovamente il digiuno del Ramadan e di celebrare ‘Id al-Fitr .

Il Pontificio Consiglio per il Dialogo Interreligioso apprezza l’importanza di questo mese nonché il grande sforzo da parte dei musulmani di tutto il mondo a digiunare, pregare e a condividere i doni dell’Onnipotente con i più poveri.

Consapevoli dei doni che scaturiscono dal Ramadan, ci uniamo a voi nel ringraziamento a Dio misericordioso per la Sua benevolenza e generosità, e vi porgiamo i nostri più cordiali auguri.

Le riflessioni che vorremmo condividere con voi in quest’occasione riguardano un aspetto vitale delle relazioni fra cristiani e musulmani: la necessità di passare dalla competizione alla collaborazione.

In passato le relazioni fra cristiani e musulmani sono state segnate troppo spesso da uno spirito di competizione, di cui si vedono le conseguenze negative: gelosia, recriminazioni e tensioni. In alcuni casi queste hanno portato a violenti scontri, specialmente quando la religione è stata strumentalizzata, soprattutto a causa di interessi di parte e di moventi politici.

Tale rivalità interreligiosa ha segnato negativamente l’immagine delle religioni e dei loro seguaci, alimentando l’idea che esse non siano fonti di pace ma, piuttosto, di tensione e violenza.

Per prevenire e superare queste conseguenze negative, è importante che noi cristiani e musulmani, pur riconoscendo le nostre differenze, ci rammentiamo di quei valori religiosi e morali che condividiamo. Riconoscendo ciò che abbiamo in comune e manifestando rispetto per le nostre legittime differenze, noi possiamo stabilire con ancor più fermezza un solido fondamento per relazioni pacifiche, passando dalla competizione e dallo scontro ad una cooperazione efficace per il bene comune. Ciò è a vantaggio, particolarmente, dei più bisognosi e permette a tutti noi di offrire una testimonianza credibile dell’amore dell’Onnipotente per l’umanità intera.

Noi tutti abbiamo il diritto e il dovere di rendere testimonianza all’Onnipotente al Quale rendiamo culto, di condividere le nostre credenze con gli altri, nel rispetto per la loro religione ed i loro sentimenti religiosi.

Per poter incoraggiare relazioni pacifiche e fraterne, lavoriamo insieme ed onoriamoci scambievolmente. In questa maniera daremo gloria all’Onnipotente e promuoveremo l’armonia nella società che è sempre più multietnica, multireligiosa e multiculturale.

Concludiamo rinnovandovi i nostri migliori auguri per un fruttuoso digiuno ed un gioioso ‘Id , e vi assicuriamo la nostra solidarietà nella preghiera.

أيّها الأخوة والأخوات المسلمون الأعزاء،

               بتدبير من عنايته تعالى، منحكم القدير مرّة أخرى نعمة صوم شهر رمضان والاحتفال بعيد الفطر السعيد.

               يعي المجلس البابوي للحوار بين الأديان ويقدّر أهميّة هذا الشهر، كما الجهد الكبير من جانب المسلمين في جميع أنحاء العالم للصوم والصلاة وتقاسم هبات الله سبحانه وتعالى مع المحتاجين.

               وإدراكا منّا للنعم المتأتيّة من شهر رمضان، نشكر وايّاكم الله الرحيم على لطفه وكرمه، ونقدّم لكم أطيب تمنيّاتنا القلبيّة.

               إن الخواطر التي نودّ مشاركتكم ايّاها في هذه المناسبة تتعلّق بجانب حيويّ من العلاقات بين المسيحيين والمسلمين: الحاجة إلى الانتقال من التنافس إلى التعاون.

               في الماضي، كانت العلاقات بين المسيحيين والمسلمين تتّسم في كثير من الأحيان بروح المنافسة، والتي يمكن رؤية عواقبها السلبيّة: الغيرة والاتّهامات المتبادلة والتوتّرات. وفي بعض الحالات أدّى ذلك إلى صدامات عنيفة، لا سيّما عندما كان يتمّ استغلال الدّين، وعلى وجه الخصوص من أجل مصالح شخصيّة ومنافع سياسيّة.

               لقد انعكس هذا التنافس بين الأديان سلبًا على صورتها وعلى أتباعها، مما يعزّز الفكرة القائلة بأنها ليست مصادر سلام، وإنّما أسباب توتّر وعنف.

               ودرءاً لهذه الآثار السلبيّة ومن أجل التغلّب عليها، من الأهمية بمكان أن نتذكّر، مسيحيين ومسلمين، القيم الدينيّة والأخلاقيّة التي نتقاسمها، بدون أن نغفل ما نختلف فيه. وإذ نعترف بما نشترك فيه ونُظهر الاحترام لاختلافاتنا المشروعة، يمكننا أن نرسّخ بمزيد من الحزم أساسًا متينًا لعلاقات سلميّة، وأن ننتقل من المنافسة والمواجهة إلى التعاون الفعّال من أجل الصالح العام. وهذا مفيد بشكل خاص للمحتاجين، ويمكّننا جميعًا من تقديم شهادة ذات مصداقيّة لحبّ الله عزّ وجل للبشرية جمعاء.

               من حقّنا وواجبنا أن نشهد لله العليّ القدير الذي نعبده وأن نشارك الآخرين معتقداتنا، ضمن ضوابط الاحترام لدينهم ولمشاعرهم الدينية.

               ومن أجل تشجيع العلاقات السلميّة والأخويّة، فلنعمل معاً ولنكرّم بعضنا بعضاً. وهكذا، نمجّد الله عزّ وجلّ ونعزّز الانسجام في مجتمعات متعدّدة الأعراق والديانات والثقافات بشكل متزايد.

               نختتم بتجديد أطيب تمنياتنا بصيام مثمر وعيد سعيد، مؤكّدين لكم تضامننا معكم في الصلاة.
